Close Baby Carrier Introduction
A close baby carrier is a device used to carry a baby on the body of an adult. Close baby carriers come in different types such as baby slings, backpack carriers, and soft front or hip carriers, with various materials and degrees of rigidity, decoration, support and confinement of the baby.
Although the use of of close baby carriers is a relatively recent phenomenon in the West, it is far from new and has been established in many cultures around the world for centuries. For example, images of children being carried in slings can be seen in Egyptian artwork dating back to the time of the Pharaohs. Many Native American mothers were using cradle boards. From the time a baby was born, he or she was wrapped up and then put into the cradle board which was then strapped to the wearer’s back, like a backpack.
The practice of using a close baby carrier is also called “babywearing“. The babywearing term was coined by the family of Dr. Sears ( askdrsears.com) after they noticed that cultures throughout the world carried their babies in homemade slings. They began fabricating different styles of slings to carry their sixth child, Mathew, as they had noticed that the more their babies were carried, the less they cried. Babywearing is one of Sears’ principles of attachment parenting and he attributes many benefits to babywearing and the in-arms style of parenting.
